It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Nick Waterlow OAM.
As an inspiring curator, teacher, mentor, director and writer, Nick Waterlow has had a profound impact on the life of many artists and curators working in Australia and overseas, enabling them to connect with new audiences for contemporary art. As a seminal figure in the visual arts community, Waterlow received a Medal of the Order of Australia for his contribution to the arts in 1990. Among his numerous and impressive endeavours were helming the 1979, 1986 and 1988 Biennales of Sydney, chairing the Australia Council for the Arts' Visual Arts Board from 1980 to 1983, and his most recent directorship of Sydney's Ivan Dougherty Gallery, about to undergo a major redevelopment. He is remembered for his pioneering spirit, wise counsel and passionate advocacy for art.
Nick Waterlow's association with Art & Australia dates back to his arrival in Australia in 1977. He was a regular contributor for over three decades, and since 2003 the magazine has been further enriched through his role as Editorial Advisor. He was a true friend of the magazine, often acting beyond the call of duty, with his ideas and expertise helping shape our recent book publication Current: Contemporary Art from Australia and New Zealand (2008). As recently as the Autumn 2009 issue of Art & Australia, he contributed a typically insightful and enlightening interview with his dear friend Ann Lewis. His generous and guiding knowledge has left an indelible mark on Art & Australia, and his legacy will be felt for years to come.
Nick Waterlow's singular contribution to the visual arts in this country and beyond will be sorely missed. Our condolences go to his partner, Juliet Darling, and the Waterlow family.
