Edition description:
Louise Weaver's Out on a limb, 2006,
is full of surprises.
It consists of a screen-printed Belgian linen bag with cotton lining, containing various found and constructed elements, with slight variation. It contains 4 elements: a lithograph poster, a CD and a handmade zine. Edition of 50, signed with a numbered certificate.
This commissioned edition complements a sculpture commission for Art & Australia's March 2007 issue cover, entitled G
uido Valdez (Vendetta for love), 2006. The concept for this edition was to create a 'fan bag' or 'show bag' for Guido Valdez. The edition creates an extension to the imagined life and times of Guido Valdez and his imaginary fantastic journeys across the world.
Further details about the 4 elements of the edition:
The poster image is constructed from digitally altered photographs of mineral and crystal specimen collections in the Australian Museum, Sydney, and is stamped by the artist in black water based ink on the rear of the poster. (The stamp was made for this edition.)
The zine is a five-page booklet, hand-stitched with polyester thread, and was created in collaboration with Peter Ellis. Images included in this publication are selected from film stills, photographs, hand-drawn and collaged images. The zine is stamped by both the artists in water-based ink.
The CD titled
bird songs, frog songs and rock songs, was created in collaboration with Phil Edwards and Peter Ellis, and includes a four-page colour booklet. The CD incorporates collaged and layered sound recordings of diverse 'natural' environments from around the world, including bird sanctuaries (Hong Kong, pre-avian flu outbreak), and other rural locations in Australia and elsewhere.
The bag size is approximately 60 cm x 37 cm. The image on the front of the bag is from an eighteenth century engraving of the Earth's plates colliding and changing under the duress of an earthquake. The image on reverse is a digitally constructed design that has its origins in a photographic image of
Guido Valdez (Vendetta for love).
There are two different handles attached to the bag. One is linen, the other is constructed from gold painted aluminium chain, hand-woven with polyester ribbon. The other customised elements added to the front of bag include handmade badges, included an image of the eye of
Guido Valdez (Vendetta for love). The front of the bag also includes a fluorescent pink polyester blossom, cut and sealed with high frequency sound waves made with an Issey Miyake evening bag
